What to Do After a Fender Bender in South Carolina

By First Choice Auto Reconditioning · Taylors, SC · October 2026

Rear bumper dent and scuff damage on a sedan

It happens in a split second — a bump at a stoplight on Wade Hampton Blvd, a parking-lot tap at the grocery store. Your heart's pounding and you're staring at a dented bumper wondering what to do first. Here's the playbook, in order.

1. Safety first, always

Move your car out of traffic if it drives safely. Turn on your hazards. If anyone is hurt, call 911 immediately — injuries come before bumpers, every time.

2. Document everything with your phone

Before anything moves, take photos: both cars, the damage up close, the license plates, the scene, the road conditions. These photos are gold later — for your insurance claim and for the shop estimating your repair.

3. Exchange information — and don't admit fault

Swap names, phone numbers, insurance info, and plate numbers with the other driver. Be polite, but don't say "it was my fault" — even casually. Fault is for the insurance companies to sort out.

4. File a police report if damage tops $1,000

South Carolina law requires a collision report when there's an injury, a death, or property damage over $1,000. Most bumper jobs clear that bar easily, so when in doubt, call it in. A report protects you if the other driver changes their story.

5. Call your insurance — then choose YOUR shop

Here's what a lot of folks don't know: in South Carolina, you have the right to choose your own repair shop. Your insurance company may "suggest" one of their network shops, but the choice is legally yours. Pick the shop you trust, not the one that saves your insurer money.

6. Get a proper estimate

That "little dent" in the bumper cover can hide cracked mounting tabs, a bent reinforcement bar, or damaged parking sensors underneath. A real estimate means the car goes on a lift and gets properly inspected — not a glance in a parking lot.

We've straightened out hundreds of fender benders across Taylors, Greer, and Greenville. Most bumper repairs are done in a few days, and we work directly with all major insurance companies — or with you directly if you're paying out of pocket.
